we had a press-conference excercise. My professor put a youtube video on the projector of my city’s police captain giving a statement to the press and taking questions from reporters.
My classmates and I were to take shorthand notes, followed immediately by writing the news story in ten minutes, as if we were breaking the story on deadline.
Then, we were supposed to write an additional paragraph about how we’d get more information about the case.
My report was as follows:
An unidentified man was shot by a Eugene Police officer during a shoot-out this afternoon in West Eugene.
No officers or other citizens were injured during the shooting.
According to Captain Rich Stronach, calls were received at roughly 3:15 by residents of the Briarwood Mobile Home Park off of Barger and Candlight Drive with reports of an armed man menacing people with a possible handgun.
An unidentified patrol officer encountered the suspect after being pointed to where he was last seen by residents of the mobile home park. After a short foot pursuit there was an exchange of gunfire, resulting in the suspect being shot.
Captain Stronach says at this time it is unclear who fired first, or how many shots were fired total.
The suspect was not fatally injured. He is now recovering at Sacred Heart Hospital.
The officer who engaged the suspect will be put on administrative leave, as per procedure.
The incident will subsequently be investigated by the Lane County Inter Agency Deadly Physical Force Investigation Team, a unit supervised by the Oregon State Police and consisting of investigators from the Eugene Police Department, Springfield Police Department, Lance County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oregon State Police.
Then, I wrote:
I would also try to obtain the 911 calls, in case one of the recordings possibly identified him. I would also interview neighbors to at least get a description, find out if he was a neighbor, or maybe get a first name
If it was really important to me, I would probably go to the hospital and try to find out the identity of the suspect by pretending to be a family member. This would probably consist of me putting on as much denim as I could possibly find (at the minimum acid-washed jacket & trousers) and the jersey of a professional sports team that doesn’t exist anymore, then running into the lobby screaming “DEY SHOT MY BRO!!” and collapsing dramatically, or, you know, something like that.
Online, I just saw the outcome.
Grade: A
Comments: LOL, nice~
It feels good to finally get something.
